The Florida A&M Student Government Association recently purchased two charter buses for recruitment trips and other SGA activities.

According to an official news release from the Office of Communications, the buses cost $450,000 and were funded by the 2008 Activities and Service Carry Forward Funds once it was approved by the FAMU Board of Trustees.

The personalized-buses, displaying the FAMU logo and an enormous rattler colored with orange and green, seats 56 and will allow SGA its own mode of transportation alleviating the cost of renting buses when traveling with students.

The recruitment team has used the new transportation already when it traveled to Tampa for a recruitment fair, and this past weekend for recruitment activities during the 30th Annual Florida Classic in Orlando.

SGA Officials, FAMU Connection, Presidential Ambassadors, FAMU Royal Court and Representatives from the FAMU Office of Student Affairs make up the recruitment team.

Dean Henry Kirby, associate vice president of student affairs, said in a press release that the buses would also promote FAMU as SGA travels to different areas in and out of Florida.

"FAMU is a brand, and to have these bright buses pulling into cities in North Carolina, Alabama and even across Florida will increase the visibility of FAMU as we continue to recruit the best and brightest students," Kirby said.

FAMU students were able to see the new buses as they parked alongside the Set.

"I had an opportunity to get on one of the buses when they arrived on campus and I was just in awe," said Brandon Hill, a third-year philosophy student from Lake City. "I think they will be a wonderful addition. The buses stand out when they are parked, so I know that while traveling on the interstate, they will have a great impact."

I am a parent, my child attends FAMU and I must say during the classic the buses stood out. Maybe if they purchased One (1) bus that would have been better. I am hoping and praying that FAMU works on getting the parking under control. When you travel to other schools there is parking lots for students, of course, FAMU makes their students parks on grass and two miles away. Hopefully the SGA brings this problems to the attention of the board. The money is there ,use it for students please.

They should instead have used that money to give Ammons another raise.

SGA=SELFISH BASTARDS...at least that's how I see them as a whole!

The buses are a great addition. Perhaps we should have updated Bragg Stadium or renovated some closed dorms, but the buses are still a plus. They invoke pride in me and makes FAMU seem more official as a premier school. NEXT IN LINE... Our Horrific Mascot's costume.

They were purchased under the Andrew Collins and Lumpkin presidency. They just made it in!

Maybe this will save Gallop's position. then again, maybe not.

But the kid is making major moves in SGA.

Rattlertopia,

FAMU has to make its presence known as a leading figure in the community affairs of this city. It has to be seen as a vital part of the Leon County community. Using A & S money for recruiting buses may not have been the most fiscally prudent thing to do. It could have been used to expand the library hours or increase the quality of student life in some way. Sometimes it seems as if SGA is self serving when it comes to student's money. Having a leadership retreat in another state does nothing to benefit the student body. The buses are nice but money could have been used in an another area.

Money well spent! As we all know, people may not be aware that there is a university in Tallahassee that isn't FSU. Of course, purchasing advertising space on other buses, billboards, television, etc. in these markets may have been cheaper, smarter, and far more visible... it doesn't matter. FAMU is world renowned for being fiscally challenged.

I was glad SGA got the new buses..but on the other hand I fill the people in SGA as a whole aren't a good representation of our school...so if they had to get the buses as front that's good. It's really just another way to make them feel like they are better than all of the other students, as shown an proven this past weekend at the Floridaa Classic.
