French author sued for Anti-Muslim comments

Author Michel Houellebecq was sued by four Muslim groups for a comment he made stating “the stupidest religion, after all, is Islam.” The comment was made in an interview with Lire magazine back in 2001. When Houellebecq appeared in court in September, he claimed he was criticizing the Muslim religion, not its followers. He also mentioned he felt contempt, not hatred for Islam, said a BBC News report. Houellebecq was recently cleared of inciting racial hatred. In Paris, three judges declared him not guilty. The Muslim groups, along with France’s Human Rights League contend that Houellebecq’s comments are “Islamophobia.” Houellebecq’s novel “Platform” has been a best- seller in France. He also won the Impact literary prize in May. The French author could spend up to 18 months in jail or be fined 70, 000 euro ($44,000) for the controversial issues in his book and the personal comments he has made. Houellebecq, who claims he has “a gift” for insults and provocation almost had to pay the price for his impacting words.
