Florida A & M University President James Ammons will be awarded a salary bonus of $113,750 following a unanimous trustee board vote Tuesday.

Trustees relied on the legal wording of Ammons' contract to award the bonus check. The contract authorizes the board to grant a performance bonus of 25-35 percent.

"We have a responsibility of honoring all legally binding contracts and not picking and choosing which contract we honor and which we do not," said Bill Jennings, chairman of the board of trustees.

Other trustees didn't agree.

"Maybe you all have something different in Florida than we have in North Carolina…we're laying off teachers," said Trustee Robert Brown.

The economic downturn, which was not up for discussion during the meeting, has caused administrators to cut almost $16 million from FAMU's 2009-2010 operational budget.

"I just think...the best way we can help our people right now is to make sure everybody keeps their jobs," Brown said.

The state of Florida covers $225,000 of Ammons' annual salary of $325,000, while the FAMU Foundation covers the rest. The board chose to award Ammons' a 35-percent performance bonus.

Florida Atlantic's Frank Brogan and Florida State's T.K. Wetherell have opted not to take recent bonus awards. There is no word yet on whether Ammons' will accept the bonus.

Wow,
With the president running the country into the ground and other state employees getting laid off and being forced to take unpaid furloughs, Ammons not only is awarded but accepts a raise? I bet that does wonders for the morale of other university employees especially those about to be laid off.

As a fellow administrator in education, I believe he should be given the bonus, with no questions asked. Unlike teachers, he does not have tenure, and when the school's image is tarnished usually everyone is calling for the President's resignation.

If Ammons decides not to take the bonus due to the current budget issues, then he should be named the next governor of Florida, or at a minimum be given a deferment of pay with interest.

If it were not for Ammons getting us of SACS probation, thousands of alum would have nullified degrees and thousands of students would've been wasting their time at a non-accredited university. We owe President Ammons much more than $113, 750.

wtf 325,000 per year. I was wondering what his salary was when they said 25-35% for a bonus and the bonus is over 100,000...I'm definitely heading down the right track!!! Future President of a University I'm happy I'm doing what I do.
The man really did do wonders for Florida A&M University and desserved the bonus...would have been really nice if he did not accept it and invested it into the university seeing that he already makes a hell of a lot of money.

When a person is a leader of a high demand position and is set as an example, that's exactly what one should do. When a person screws up that person gets every negative response there is and when a person does good that person should get every position response. When he excepts the bonus that example would be never to short change yourselves. He earned the money because it was his job to put the University back on track he did that. Should he be paid for it right now? hell yes. opinions, opinions everyone has one but, the only opinion that matters in this situation is the Board"s. Oh, and by the way it was a contract. And to the writer that mentioned competent personnel was needed FYI: competency is not taught its natural intelligence.

1. Per contract language, Ammons absolutely deserves and should be awarded this performance bonus.
2. With the full knowledge of a weakening economy, as well as the forthcoming substantial increases in student tuitions and fees, he should immediately reject this bonus as a matter of honor and solidarity.
3. The individuals who review and approve these custom State of Florida employment contracts should be replaced by more competent personnel.

I agree that the board did the right thing by giving Ammons the bonus. I say this only because LEGALLY, they were obligated to do so. If they didn't, FAMU could once again be in trouble with the law. HOWEVER, as leader of the University, when you know that your staff members are losing jobs and having their saleries cut, it's your responsibility to do what you can to help out, which includes NOT taking the bonus when you already earn over $200,000 a year in Tallahassee where the cost of living is minimal compared to other places. This is where the tide, among faculty at least, will start to turn against him.

I completely agree. Ammons def. deserves the money..HOWEVER I believe the timing is off. We have just received an 15% tuition increase not to mention the increasing amount of workers in the Journalism school who have been recently laid off. It's almost as if the students and their dollars and educations do not matter. When will the students get a tuition cut? we need a break too! especially during this recession.

Talk about a rock and a hard place! I think Ammons is doing a wonderful job; he does deserve the bonus, but given the economic challenges and the appearanace to outsiders, he really can't take the money without being a bad guy.
Maybe they can put in into a different fund to be paid out later, when the economics improve?

I feel that Dr. Ammons did earn the money. However, it would be nice if he would accept it and donate it to a fund for the laid-off employees who have no such bonuses forthcoming.

I hope President Ammons will not accept the bonus. What was the board thinking?

The man is not a volunteer. He is paid to do a job and he is doing a good job. If it wasn't for him, FAMU would still be in the SACS doghouse. He should take the money. A deal is a deal.

Wait, let me get this right...$113,750? Ammons better not accept this!
so disappointed!

This has got to be a JOKE! $113,750?! When will FAMU learn?

You have to obey the rules of contracts but out of good faith Ammons should decline the bonus unless his job is on the line as well. In that case that the money and run we in a recession!
