Homosexual pastors look to balance lifestyle

Being a pastor over a congregation means accepting the calling that God had over one’s life.  But what if one’s calling interferes with one’s lifestyle?

According to www.avert.org, there are reportedly more than 5 million gay or lesbian people living in the United States.

Out of the various denominations, less than half of them allow gays or lesbians to have a place in the pulpit. If they are granted the right to preach, many of the denominations make it law that the pastors remain celibate.

The issue of homosexual’s rights has been a much-debated topic for decades. More fuel is being added to the fire when the issue of homosexuals becoming reverends comes into play.

The Anglican Lutheran denomination passed a law in August that allows all preachers, regardless of sexual preference, to teach the Bible and remain in a monogamist relationship.

The question that many churchgoers are raising is if allowing gay pastors the right to preach a contradiction itself?

Marda Messick is the residing pastor over a Saint Lutheran Church and believes that the judging should be left to God.

“I don’t feel that anyone has the right to deny a person of their calling,” Messick said.

“Sexual preference should not even be an issue.”

According to Messick, there are 10 gay and lesbian affirming churches in Tallahassee and Messick hopes they continue to grow.

Not everyone is as hopeful for such a dramatic change in the church.

Jerrell Dukes, 21, a fourth-year business student believes that he has no right to judge but wouldn’t attend a church that a gay pastor was over.

“If I was in church listening to him, in the back of my mind I would be thinking I can’t believe him,” Dukes said. “He is doing exactly what the Bible says not to do.”

The churches also seem to be divided. This debate may be far from over but in some churches the doors have already been closed on this issue.

Josh Linder, 21, a fourth-year business student, attends a Baptist church but doesn’t know if he has the right to make such a big decision.

“Who am I to say what someone can and cannot do?” Linder said. “I don’t know what their calling is. I just really don’t know.”

The Bible states in Leviticus 1:27:  “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman. This is an abomination.”

Although this verse is in black and white, many churches debate that the interpretation of the Bible can be taken in different ways. The time frame and setting in which the Bible was written makes it difficult to take the entire book literally.

“If I took everything the Bible said for verbatim, I wouldn’t be able to preach at all because I am a woman,” Messick said.

Regardless of what is in the Bible, homosexuals are receiving their licensing to preach.

“I’m not perfect but I want somebody leading me who is at least trying,” Dukes said.  “But who’s right is it really to judge?”

"God said in the end times men would be lovers of one another so for this prophecy to come true God would have to make some people homosexual."

You misquoted the Bible. As expected. It says men would be lovers of "themselves" 2 Timothy 3:2

"People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3unfeeling, uncooperative, slanderous, degenerate, brutal, hateful of what is good, 4traitors, reckless, conceited, and lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. "

Next time, God's Child, put the reference in there so EVERYONE can look it up and you should read in context.

The whole point is it doesn't matter is you were born that way, trained that way, or forcefully changed, Jesus said:
“If anyone wants to follow me, he must deny himself, pick up his cross, and follow me continually." So if you're gay, a liar, murderer, rapist, child molester (you better turn yourself in), deny your sinful ways, pick up the cross of Jesus and follow Him.

None of this is worth it when He returns to Judge. And let's not forget, it is the same Jesus who didn't judge when he was on earth who will come back to Judge in the last day. Is your sin worth it? And this is for not just the gays but all sinners too.

Very interesting comments made by all. So I will take a few moments to add a few cents. First and most importantly, God loves all. But I will say it clearly that God does not like sin. In fact he hates it (no matter who's doing it), becuase it kills, steals and destroys our relationship with him. He is a Holy and loving God, but he will judge sin. I could give several scriptures to back that statement up, but I believe that's unnecessary as most of us would agree.

So the question is, have you truly taken this issue of sex without a covenant to God and has he said that it's OK to engage in this activity. So often we give our opinion to suit what we want to be true. But I recommend that all of us seek God and not our own desires or beliefs. Truly our ways are not his ways. Accept Christ first and study God's Holy Word. Take care, Love ya.

As a Pastor, it is interesting to hear the perspectives that have been rendered, and I value the fact that there is an opportunity for discussion to take place. But, I think it is imperative to mention the fact that there is one thing that can define who you are, and the original mandate placed on a man or woman. The original purpose for your life was initiated in Genesis 1:26, where it says, 'Let us make man in our image and likeness.... MALE and FEMALE created He (GOD) them, and said be fruitful, multiply, subdue, and have dominion." Before an assignment was ever distributed GOD authenticated your gender and gave you the necessary tools to be successful in fulfilling the aforementioned mandate. Preaching or the gift thereof is a grace gift and it is given without repentence. That means that the gift will function even while I am in sin. I think we've missed the mark somewhere and it is mainly because of the mainstream media which has dissensitized us into believing that homosexuality is apart of creation. When in fact, it diometrically opposes the original plan for the institution of the family and it's structure.

Now, I believe that he created us unlike any other thing in creation. By that I mean, we have free moral thoughts and decision making ability. Unlike one of the previos bloggers I believe that homosexuality is sin, however, in the eyes of GOD, it is viewed through the same lens as adultery, fornication, lying, etc. I am fortunate to have the benefit of having a relative that lived as a homosexual for quite awhile. He no longer adheres to that choice. The one thing that he is adamant about is the fact that the mind has to be transformed (Romans 12: 1-2) in order to break the power of that choice. It is unfortunate that dialogue about this issue cannot (is not) be discussed in the church. I welcome the dialogue. Be blessed!

Yes you can Mcmahon. Pray about it and keep praying and watch and wait and see what God can do. What a mighty God we serve. There is nothing to hard for God.

God said in the end times men would be lovers of one another so for this prophecy to come true God would have to make some people homosexual. This means not everyone in this black and white world chooses to be gay or not that cant help it its the way they were created. Just because your one way does not mean that your less than someone else, or incapable of being anointed by God. People really need to stop preseucuting others and telling them who called them and who didn't. If you don't like the way God made them simply don't go to their church or be around them simple as that. They arn't going to lose any kind of sleep trust me.

If someone can "choose" to be gay, that means that you chose to be straight. When exactly did that happen? Was it in the 5th grade, the 6th grade, or the 7th grade? Jesus himself was never with a woman so are you saying that he was gay? And I also don't ever remember him saying a thing about homosexuality so why are you talking about it? If it was such a problem don't you think Jesus would have condemned it? He talked about love, and compassion, and taking care of the poor. Never said anything about homosexuality. And pastors continually make mistakes, it's many of them having sex with their mistress before and after church, Sunday after Sunday and all through the week, carrying on affairs for years. Seems like they aren't making ONE or TWO mistakes, it goes on for yours. But I bet that doesn't stop you from sitting in the pews. Just admit it you are a bigot and a homophobe and a disgrace of a human being. Hypocrisy is never a good look.

The Bible makes it totally clear that men are to be with women, and women with men. People in this world are confused and they choose to be gay. I however have enough sense to know that all pastors do not follow the Bible verbatim. Knowing that all people do sin, I can not expect a pastor to be perfect. The line is drawn when you stop trying to live like Jesus lived. A gay pastor is not trying to live like Jesus lived. A pastor who makes a mistake while he is young, has a baby, repents, and never has that problem again is striving to portray an image similar to Jesus. I agree with the person who said they could not go to a church where there was a gay pastor. I would not either.

Lots of pastors do things that the bible says not to do. Like commit adultery. Don't act like a pastor has never had a child with another woman while he was married. Lots of pastors are on drugs, lighting up a blunt before they attend church. Lots of pastors lie. Lots of pastors cheat. Lots of pastors steal.

OMG how can people be so STUPID? If being gay is a sin (I don't think it is) doesn't the bible say something about all human beings sins? Born into sin. The only one who wasn't was Jesus Christ!

FOR THE LAST DAMN TIME HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT A LIFESTYLE!

UGH.

BOATING IS A LIFESTYLE.
GAMBLING IS A LIFESTYLE.
GOING TO CHURCH IS A LIFESTYLE.

YOU CAN STOP DOING ALL OF THOSE THINGS.

I NOR ANY OTHER HOMOSEXUAL CAN STOP BEING GAY.
