Matthew Richardson

While growing up, I have always hidden something from my parents; something that I fell in love with ever since my older brother introduced me to it when I was in grade school.  Unlike some teens, which may hide dirty magazines, alcohol, or cigarettes, my vice was hip-hop music.

“Why hide music from your parents?” some may ask, well my family is deeply rooted in Christianity.

My father is a pastor of a church in Tallahassee named Jesus Apostolic, not to mention the slew of uncles and aunts who are pastors, deacons, or evangelist. So, while some other parents might not find problems with listening to secular music, I was told not to, or else. As a result hip-hop music became my alcohol.

I remember the first hip-hop song I heard that I couldn’t get enough of: Fabolous’s “Young’n (Holla Back)”. The single from his first album was back in 2001, so you know how sheltered I was.

I would jam out in my brother’s red Honda CR-X because that was the only place I could get my buzz without being caught. After that, I wanted more. I loved the beats, the rhymes, and the style. Everything about hip-hop I loved. But come Sunday morning, it was back to the choir and back to traditional praise and worship songs—nothing wrong with that—but I guess you could call my thoughts being more focused on hip-hop while in church, a “hangover.”

The first album I bought was 50 Cent’s The Massacre in 2005. After that, I bought Nas’ “Illmatic”. To this day I have 255 albums in my collection, with only 46 being Christian CDs. Do my parents know? Of course not. They have threatened to both my older siblings and I that if a secular album were found it would be thrown away.

The bible doesn’t say anything about what type of music we should listen to; however, my parents read to me a few scriptures that may pertain to secular music.

I Corinthians 10:31 reads: So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

I’m pretty sure plenty of hip-hop music isn’t encouraging me to glorify God. So what excuse could I give them after that? None. So when it came to me watching BET’s Rap City Program while I was home alone and I heard my parents walking through the door, I would turn away from it like it was Cinemax…after dark. And when it came to me having my enormous album book, I would hide it under my bed. What can I say, I do it for hip-hop.

Well u think its good that you are real with your struggles and there are millions of people who relate to you. Now as far as the music goes. I was in a similar situation, with the music. I loved me some R&b with all those people you know brandy and maria and all the, because of their vocal techniques anyway. I was raised in the church in a penticostal church at that where any secular music is not good. one day my mom came to me and was like you are different you cant listen to that stuff because its not who you are. So that day I felt condemed and never listened to it again. I found people in gospel music who were similar. I would suggest the same to you that you find a artist who is similar in gospel. Now I do know that the type of music carries spirits within in. Believe it or not it is a spirtiual battle when you listen to that music it will start to take over you and you crave it more and more. Its another strong hold that can be broken. Im am young myself take it from me it can be done. If you can't do it let God. There are many types of spirits.

Jay Mac its unfortunate that you are so small minded that you think there are no positives in Hip Hop. I dare you to do your homework about gospel music. Look back less than 100 years ago and see what the issues were with traditional music. People thought the same way you did when they were trying to get choirs into churches. There are numerous gospel hip hop artist that are paving the way for a new music format. LeCrea, Ambassador, Cross Movement and my own artist Tha GIM are just a few of the growing number of artist that are expressing their message through hip hop. And guess what although the market is small it is beginning to grow. Thanks to the Gospel Music Channel and other media sources gospel hip hop is getting attention. If we as christian parents keep trying to scare our children from doing and listening to certain things instead of monitoring what they do then they will do things like sneak and listen to secular hip hop and look at things like pornography. If we keep telling them not to, they will go behind our backs and have collections of stuff sitting right under our noses, under the bed. We have to be diligent and more steadfast in how we communicate with children today. Temptation is all around them and the information age is not making it any easier. Ministers and Decons need to open their minds, we are loosing children that as infants are in the church, but thanks to their ignorance or lack of understanding of MODERN issues surrounding children, these same children are leaving the church as they get older and doing unspeakable things. We need to reach them when we have them, early on in the church pews and in Sunday school. Give them options, let them see there are gospel hip hop artist that have spiritual messages in their music. Either you can let them listen to Tha GIM or they can sneak behind you and listen to Snoop Dogg. You make the choice.

Its not the song but the VESSEL its coming from. To say that a song is good but RKelly sings it is like saying The water is clean but the cup is moldy and nasty. God Talks about putting new wine in an old Pouch in the Bible, You can make excuses but you cannot get to a real place in God when your putting sex, violence, drugs, Pride, Materialism, and so much more into your temple constantly.

God can deliver you, you have the strength to stop. I used to DJ reggae music and then I got saved, I started listening to the words and was like I dont agree with anything they are saying.

You know the truth, I would advise you to just make up your mind to throw them away but make sure they cannot be played anymore, break them, burn them, scratch them up, somethin!

The bible says to gaurd your heart for out of it flows the issues of life, you dont want this contamintaing you, IT IS!

May The LORD strengthen you

i really think that listening to secular song is wrong 1) because of the fact that 90 percent of the times the lyrics are very bad and doesnt honour god
2)GOD BSICALLY WANTS OUR LIVES TO REVOLVE AROUND HIM
3)I NOE THIS MIGHT SEEM LIKE A SMALL LITTLE SIN THAT CAN BE FORGIVEN BUT IT ALL STARTS FORM LITTLE TO BIGGER AND BIGGER SINS
jUST ALWAYS BE LOVING AND WANTING TO HEAR MORE OF HIS WORD AND KEEPING A REALTIONSHIP WITH HIM WILL LEAD U NOT TO LISTEN TO THOSE SONGS TRUST ME I USED TO BUT I REALIZED THAT WHEN U KEEP CLOSE TO GOD ITS HARD TO BE LEAD IN THAT TRAP GOD BLESS LOVE YOU ALL!

People please stop giving the " secular music is ok, not all Secular music have bad messages in them" speech. The Bible Commands us to do everything unto the Lord, not some things to the Lord. So if Beyonce does a few gospel songs and a lot of adulterous "all my single ladies" booty shaking songs, can we then listen to her. NO. The word COMMANDS us to "abstain from the very appearance of evil". So no hip hop, swearing, fornication, etc. We have to live holy and pleasing lives to God. whats pleasing about divorced, fornicating, LiL waynes "She lick me like a Lolli-pop" People of God, where's the standard, where do we draw a line and never push it back. Please, Abstain from this evil music because you cant serve 2 masters. Serve God with a hart filled with Holliness not hip hop. Pray that thing away my friends.

As a Pastor and former College Student, I now can identify with both sides of this coin. I did not have a Christian family structure or the pleasure/patience of being a PK, but I accepted the Lord as my savior at the age of 16 and then attempted to live with my music on the side. In my day it was Luther, Prince, Kid and Play, etc. But what I found to be very troubling was that it did not stop there with the music. I’m sure others would agree, it was followed by a life of sexual impurity, cheating and lying to name a few. I had a form of Godliness but lacked the power within. I knew that I was spiraling, but lacked the ability or better yet the strength to overcome. You see, it was because I enjoyed what I was doing while I was doing it. Without realizing the heavy price I would pay later. Paul himself said, “The thing that I want to do… I do not and the things that I do not want to do…that I do. Therefore, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me...” He ended by saying “Who shall deliver me from this body of sin?” As Christians, there may not be a warring for our eternal salvation, but there is still a war for our soul (mind, will and emotions) which if we do not protect ourselves from what we hear, see and do we will live a life constantly trying to be satisfied by that “loving feeling” as the song goes instead of his amazing love that’s filled with healing. He put a new song in my heart and he wants to do the same for you. Be blessed my friends.

All Hip-Hop isn't devil worshiping. There are indeed some great songs by great artists that have positive messages. As a PK myself, I love all kinds of music. Yes, Gospel is one of my faves, but not the only. I can listen to R&B, Rap, Punk, Rock, etc........whatever I'm in the mood for. As far as honoring your mother and father, I agree with that, but no sin is greater than the other (except the only unforgiving one). I feel as though, people that lie, cheat, steal, whatever are going against God and we go to him and ask for forgivness. We are all sinners, no man/woman is completely rightous. Its all about where the heart is, confess your sins and accept him as the head of your life. Believe that he hung, bled, and died for the remission of your sins and try to live by his word. Recognize and Accept when you've messed up and pray that HE tosses it into the Sea of Forgiveness.

So you admit that you are living like a devil (lying) to listen to music that does nothing but kill, steal and destroy the lives of our youth. Brother, i am going to pray for you because you know it's wrong to listen to. But, hopefully you will find out for yourself that there's nothing positive in Hip Hop Music. The Word also says to "Honor your mother and father that your days may be long" Disobeying their rules is shortening your life. Do what's right. When you you get out and are in your own house, do what you want, but while you are in your parent's house, respect their rules. Really look at the lyrics of the music that you like. They are words that kill. You should know there is power in the tongue and as you are singing these songs, those words are getting in to your spirit. I pray the Lord opens your eyes to your destructive behavior and that you get back on track. I hear your cry and am praying for you brother in Jesus' name.
