The city of Tallahassee recently held a two-day grant writing workshop at City Hall.

To attend the event, one had to register on talgov.com. The grant-writing workshop was intended to give residents tips on how to write grants for federal funding. Anyone was able to attend the workshop, but it was specifically intended for those in housing, development and redevelopment.

The workshop was put together by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the City of Tallahassee.

Carlette Crosby said that the workshop gave individuals an opportunity to learn how to utilize resources that are available and build up in the community. The workshop consisted of many sections that taught development strategies, information on leveraging and building community assets, and how to use programs effectively.

Many people know that resources exist but don’t know how to take advantage of those resources in place for them.

“So many people want to take advantage of the resources that are available, but they just don’t quite know how to write the grant to do so. We thought it would be beneficial for the city to partner up with HUD to have a free workshop that anyone could attend,” Mayor John Dailey said in a release.

This workshop was the perfect opportunity to give individuals all the information needed to be able to take advantage.

“I’m grateful to be able to be in attendance for this workshop. I felt like I was given a cheat sheet to get federal funding. I’m glad the city of Tallahassee gave us the opportunity to be able to gain knowledge about resources in place for people like us who want to build up the community,” China Jackson said.

While this workshop may have given individuals insight into a way of getting federal funding for housing and community assets, many residents want the city to keep these types of workshops going to help residents gain information about other resources that they can tap into.

“I loved the workshop and the information given, I hope that something of the same nature can continue, and the city is able to bring forth similar workshops so that individuals are able to learn and take advantage of federal funding in place for us in different aspects of careers,” Abraham Johnson said.

The city holds workshops that cover a variety of topics, and they are available to residents. Go to talgov.com to search for workshops and classes that may interest you.
