It takes self-confidence and more than little bit of nerve to open a new business during a pandemic. Maxwell Winger seems to have plenty of both.

Winger, an Orlando native, is a 22-year-old with a degree in economics from FSU who had the brilliant idea of turning his passion into his biggest success story: Max’s Steak, Shakes and Fries.

His new restaurant, located at 1600 WestCall St., Suite 104, is in the plaza next to Bellezza Beauty Bar and not rap at all from his alma mater.

I had the pleasure of eating at this lovely establishment and I was very impressed with my meal. The service was excellent as well as the customer service. The employees made me feel comfortable and helped provide me with feedback on what I should try being that it was my first time.

“Trying new restaurants is something I often enjoy doing, so when I heard about Max’s I had to check it out. I ordered the Wiz Wit and had absolutely no complaints, everything about it was perfect, it is definitely something I would recommend to others” said Morgan Sims.

On the menu, Max’s offers a variety of Philly cheesesteak subs, and some are quite inventive. Customers have the option of choosing between specialty subs as well as gourmet fries and delicious milk shakes.

Winger’s motivation stemmed from his recent graduation in May. “I’ve been cooking for a while and being that I was a student, I realized what students liked and I wanted to take tasty foods and revamp them to make quick affordable meals,” said Winger.

Max’s has been open for about two months and business has never been better. There is currently a 12-person staff, with plans of growing that number. Winger says his goal is to grow his business with the hopes of opening more locations, but not too soon.

The most popular item on the menu is said to be the Wiz Wit, which is the perfect mixture of shaved steak, Wit unions covered in Whiz cheese. This classic Philly cheesesteak is so delicious that residents from Philadelphia often visit just to grab a bite.

Max’s is open everyday Sunday-Thursday from 11a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m.

Soft pretzels were recently added to the menu and are said to be a banger.
