The original Beta Alpha chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority hosted a throwback dance class Tuesday in collaboration with SplackFitness called 1-2 Step Class.
The dance class was themed around the popular throwback song “1-2 Step,”by Ciara.
Students who were interested in attending had to RSVP through an Eventbrite link. The event sold out within 30 minutes of it going live.
Having such a large turnout, Beta Alpha not only brought out upperclassmen, but freshmen and sophomores attended too.
The event was part of the annual AKA week, hosted every academic year during the springtime. This year’s week is themed the Beta Alpha “Millennium Tour,” where the sorority looks to engage in fun, social awareness, lots of entertainment, and last but never least — service.
During the event, two assistant instructors with SplackFitness had hearts racing to major hit songs of the early 2000s, teaching the students short, 8-count workouts. The instructors showed the students a variety of methods from ftwerk to workout routines to 1, 2 step.
Keeping to the Millennium Tour theme, the students warmed up to the throwback song “The Wobble”by V.I.C.
“At first I was a little unsure because I can’t dance and I have no rhythm, but I ended up having a great time,” freshman Amiya Bowers said.
Water was provided for everyone.
“This event has been one for the books, once the students got more comfortable with dancing they seemed to be enjoying themselves amongst their friends.” Beta Alpha member, Tatyana Berry said.
They also did a dance together where they all had to work as a team and execute the same moves.
The upbeat and high energy class seemed to generate laughs, smiles and sweat across the room.
“Once I got comfortable and started talking, we had a good time together laughing and dancing. You could tell confidence was built around the room from the workouts,” Bowers said.
The event concluded with a group dance, and two cool down dances to “The Wobble.”
While it lasted only an hour it seemed to be an exciting and productive workout for many people.
