Five dollars.

That’s all you need for two large tender ribs falling off the bone, drenched in two different barbecue sauces that rest on top of two soft pieces of white bread. To top it all off, homemade macaroni and cheese and baked beans are on the side.

This food truck specializes in providing its customers with hot, fresh Southern classics – with flair. Started in 2015, Breadwinners BBQ has made its name as the go-to five-dollar dinner spot.

Born and raised in Tallahassee, owner La’Tolan Barrington has been cooking since he was a young boy right next to his father and granddad. After being able to experience a successful black man like his grandfather start and run his own nightclub, Barrington knew he wanted to work for himself.

“I love cooking, always have but I also knew I didn't want to work for anyone, Seeing my grandfather around the nightclub and just being there showed me a lot truly,” Barrington said.

Starting his business is definitely a highlight in his life’ having his community’s support and love keeps Barrington motivated because having a small business is not always easy.  With new laws and taxes always popping up for business owners, Barrington keeps sane by smiling and laughing with his regular customers.

“With different state taxes and county taxes popping up its truly hard to make a profit when it’s not booming,” Barrington said. “Honestly being a small business owner it’s like they want to keep us down cause they always find new ways to eat up all our money.”

Located at 1907 S. Adam St., it is supering convenient for Florida A&M students to grab a bite at any time. Knowing that students do stay up late Breadwinners BBQ stays open until midnight.

The five-dollar dinner is his popular item, but for those who want more it certainly has a lot to offer: chicken sandwiches, sausages, burgers, chicken leg quarters, rib sandwiches and a whole slab of ribs. If it can go on the grill, Barrington’s got it.

And it is indeed pocket friendly. Prices range from $3-$30 and all dinners come with two sides. Customers can choose from homemade macaroni and cheese, potato salad and baked beans.

With tons of reviews on Facebook it’s clear that Breadwinners BBQ is a local favorite and a must-stop for all when they come to Tallahassee.

Jason McDowell, one of many customers who left Facebook reviews, wrote “Chicken & ribs were absolutely outstanding. A large portion for a great price.”

Utilizing his skills, Barrington also travels and helped feed locals post Hurricane Michael.

Monica Christine wrote on the Breadwinners BBQ Facebook page. “Loved it! Thank you for coming out to help post Hurricane Michael and feeding everyone!”

Having a 4.7 out of 5 rating, Barrington is definitely keeping his customers happy one five-dollar dinner at a time.
