A new non-profit organization on Florida A&M University’s campus made its debut by hosting an event preparing students for job recruiters. Jewels Incorporated gave students an opportunity to get their headshot taken free of charge on Friday, Jan. 25 in the multipurpose room.
Executive Administrator of Jewels Inc., Jada Lloyd, felt the event would be something to everyone would benefit from.
“We partnered up with FAMU Leadership and Service Learning to bring light to this new organization,” said Lloyd. “We wanted to do something different and beneficial to every student and we wanted to provide this opportunity to students and the public.”
Jewels Inc. was founded by B. Marcell Williams 12 years ago on Howard University’s campus. According to jewelsincorporated.org, the founder Williams saw that there was need to work with students at Howard University and the Washington D.C. community.
The goal of the organization is to empower young urban girls as future leaders through education, training, and social activism. The FAMU chapter of Jewels Inc. was founded Wednesday Jan. 9 by Cortney Steward, Neillia Nicholas, and Jada Lloyd.
Leadership and service-learning coordinator for Efferson Student Union & Activities, Stephanie Colter, said headshots are essential for students when searching for jobs and networking.
“Headshot is something that all students need they may not realize that they need it but it’s something that beneficial for students,” said Colter. “I am glad that Jewel Inc. took the initiative especially that Career fair is around the corner.”
From Jan. 27 through Jan. 31, the FAMU Career and Professional Development Center have been hosting events leading up to the Spring 2019 Career & Internship Expo. The expo will take place on Wednesday Jan. 30, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Alfred Lawson Jr. Multipurpose Center and Teaching Gymnasium.
Events like the “JCPenney Suit-Up”, “Prepare for the Fair”, “Networking Mixer” and more are all a part of the expo week.
Having a headshot photo can help with professional self-branding. The Career Center offers assistance with finding an internship or job, resume critiques, interview preparation, career workshop, networking assistance, and management assistance.
Branch Director of the FAMU chapter of Jewels Inc. Cortney Steward had the idea for the event after seeing the need for a free headshot event on campus.
“I felt like this event was needed from business to pharmacy students we all need a headshot photo for our LinkedIn account,” said Steward. “I haven’t seen any organization publicly to this has an event.”
According to professional marketing agency thinkcatalyst.co, the importance of having a headshot photo can represent who you are and your personality. With social media and sites like LinkedIn, your headshot photo is your introduction and first impression. The average cost of a professional headshot photo can cost $75 to $100.
Jewels Inc. plans to host events like professional development, resume building, and community engagements.
Business administration major Jada Brooks enjoyed the event and how convenient it was.
“I enjoyed this event, it was a great way to learn about this organization and get a free headshot to add to my LinkedIn and Handshake account,” said Brooks.
The Jewels organization is currently planning more events to encourage more young girls within the community to embrace their inner jewels through activities such as etiquette classes and community service.
