Stressed? Check out Word Wednesday Live

Nancy Boyd knows how to have a good time.

More importantly, she wants to make sure students at FAMU have a good time on campus to balance the stresses of college life.

Boyd works in the Office of Student Activities on Florida A&M’s campus and serves as the coordinator of fraternity and sorority life.

“Every other week we have an event that we call Word Wednesday Live,” Boyd said. “It's an opportunity for students to hang out and enjoy themselves.”

During these Wednesdays students are offered a variety of activities to take their minds off of classes, tests and homework. Students have the chance to mingle with one another and can take part in spoken word or can just sit back and enjoy the sweet tunes of old and new school music.

“It's just a nice break for the students to talk, play cards, anything to help lighten the load of school,” Boyd said.

If you’re lucky, you could get to hear Boyd herself spit a few bars or hit some high notes on the karaoke microphone. It's worth noting, she does a great impersonation of the Isley Brothers’ hit record “Contagious.”

College can be an emotional roller coaster full of ups and downs so it pays to have events such as Boyd’s on campus. It's getting to that point in the semester with spring break right around the corner and midterms piling up.

It can all be overwhelming and quite hectic.

“Sometimes when you’re so focused you need something to take your mind off things to help you refocus. It's a good way to laugh, have fun and take care of yourself,” Boyd said.

So instead of falling behind in assignments and giving yourself anxiety. Boyd’s event provides a healthy substitute where you can clear your mind before diving back into the realities of textbooks.

Every Word Wednesday Live takes place in the Rattlers Den located near The Set during the middle of the day from noon to 3 p.m. More information can be found in the office of student activities.
