A pop youth outreach group, Magellan Youth Leaders Inspiring Future Empowerment (MY LIFE) is making its way to Tallahassee. MY LIFE is targeted for at-risk youth between the ages of 13 and 23.

The event will kick off Feb. 24 at the Palmer Munroe Teen Center from 6-8 p.m.

MY LIFE provides adolescence with a distinct opportunity to use their experiences, talents and voices to encourage positive change. It also helps heal others by bringing people, who may be experiencing similar hardships, together.

The organization consists of a series of events ranging from education to outreach for other youth, families, professionals and the community. Through regular meetings, special events, local and national workshops, presentations and performances, the group is primarily concerned with important issues affecting our youth.

MY LIFE is firm in advocating for the youth who have experienced  mental health, substance abuse, juvenile justice and foster care-related issues.

The program’s monthly events feature motivational speakers, uplifting entertainment, fun activities, information on a variety of youth related topics and free food for everyone to enjoy.

There is no cost to join the celebration, as MY LIFE invites everyone to come out and show support for those who have been affected by issues or illnesses.

Providing youth with leadership and outreach necessary to help reduce the stigma associated with being a young person living with a mental illness and substance abuse is their main focus.

Charles McDonald, executive director of MY LIFE, said they have received an abundance of support since opening in 2008.

“Many youth we serve find healing as they express themselves through song, dance, art and poetry, all of which are encouraged by the MY LIFE program,” McDonald said.

Future MY LIFE dates are set for March 23, April 27 and May 25.
