Lady Rattlers strike Tigers

The Lady Rattlers defeated the Savannah State Lady Tigers in impressive fashion, taking two of three in a rain-soaked series.

The teams played two games Sunday instead of Saturday because of rain in a series that marked the beginning of conference play for both.

Saturday’s game wasn’t close as the Lady Rattlers dropped the contest 9-1. However, the team bounced back, winning Sunday’s games 7-5 and 15-1, respectively.

FAMU improved to (12-19, 2-1 MEAC) as the Lady Tigers record fell to (17-15, 1-2 MEAC).

The Lady Rattlers had multiple standout performances in the victories. Among them were from two senior outfielders, Brielle Gordon and Christina Robbs, and two freshman centers, Denise Anderson and Miesha McBride.

Gordon led the team with three hits and four RBIs. She did most of her damage by belting a three-run home run.

Anderson tacked on the power surge with a home run of her own.  She hit a three-run homerun and had five RBIs in one win. Anderson’s home run began an eight-run eruption, which led to a 14-1 advantage in the fourth inning.

Robbs and McBride were just as successful keeping the ball in play, adding two hits apiece.

The teams pitching balanced out a great offensive output.

Providing five strong innings, senior pitcher Ashley Minter gave up only one earned run and five hits.

After a shaky start from freshman pitcher Amber Fullwood, fellow freshman pitcher Kenya Pererira entered the game for six innings, giving up one run and striking out four batters.

The Lady Rattlers will take their red-hot offense to Montgomery, Ala., facing the Alabama State Lady Hornets on Tuesday.
