Rattlers drop series to Mercer

The Rattlers looked shaky as they dropped their first road series to the Mercer Bears.

The Rattlers (2-3) were swept by the Bears (5-0) in back-to-back days, losing 12-4 on the front end and 10-2 in the series finale Wednesday.

Despite losing, the Rattlers had a number of players stand out
Junior left fielder Marlon Gibbs went 2 for 4 from the plate and scored one run. Senior designated hitter Bennie Robinson led the team with two runs batted in.

Junior catcher Jeremy Barlow and first baseman Ryan Kennedy each had one RBI.

The Bears started off scoring six runs in the first two innings. The Rattlers were unable to mount a response until the fifth, where they scored three of their four runs.

Bears junior second baseman Devin Bonin batted in four RBIs on the day, three of which came off of a triple.

Senior center fielder Sasha Lagarde dominated the Rattlers, hitting two home runs and batting in three RBIs.

Offensive struggles were evident for the Rattlers as they struck out 13 times and left13 runners stranded.

In the series finale, Kennedy led FAMU’s bats, hitting a home run.
Junior infielder Ryan Huston contributed with a sacrifice fly out to bring in Gibbs, but it wasn’t enough for the Rattlers.

The Bears took over in the sixth inning, scoring five runs.

Mercer senior first baseman Nick Backlund and freshman designated hitter Howard Joe each hit home runs to seal the game.

The Rattlers return to Moore-Kittles Field to face Jackson State in a weekend set on Saturday.
