Softball team opens season winless

Offense was difficult to come by for the Lady Rattlers softball team to open their season.

The Lady Rattlers (0-5) came away winless in the Mercer University Softball Invitational.

In the five games, the Florida A&M bats were anemic, mustering up only 17 total hits.

The first game was lopsided as Eastern Kentucky took down the Lady Rattlers 11-2. Senior outfielder Brielle Gordon and freshman pitcher Kenya Pereira accounted for the lone runs. The team also showcased some early season jitters with three errors.

Struggles continued for the Lady Rattlers when they took on host Mercer. They dropped the game 9-1.

Games three and four were both played against Samford and were closely contested, but the Lady Rattlers dropped both, 4-2. Fielding again doomed the team as it committed four errors in the fourth game.

The fifth game was a rematch with Eastern Kentucky, yet the results remained the same to the tune of a 6-2 score. Junior infielder Alyssa Weaver had two of the Lady Rattlers’ three hits but got very little contribution from her teammates.

The Lady Rattlers will have to regroup quickly as they travel to Orlando on Friday for the UCF Marriott Invitational.
