FAMU Connection to perform in Orlando

The FAMU Connection will perform at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando for the university’s scholarship and recruitment fair Friday.

Scholarships will be awarded to eligible high school students in an effort to recruit some of the best and brightest. Admissions officials will be on site to work with interested individuals.

The scholarships to be presented include the Life Gets Better Scholarship, the Distinguished Scholar Award and the George W. Gore Assistantship.

There will also be performances by the theatrical company, FAMU Connection, and appearances by the FAMU Royal Court, presidential ambassadors and university administrators.

For more than 29 years, the FAMU Connection has performed for prospective students around the world.

“These group of students travel with recruitment and sing, dance and tell FAMU stories to high school students,” said Kimberly Harding, an associate theater professor.

The FAMU Connection consists of a diverse group of students that includes 12 singers, three musicians and four technical-crew members. Performances inform students about the culture, accomplishments and amenities offered at FAMU.

James Webb, director of the FAMU Connection, said the group upholds FAMU’s culture with each performance.

“Students will witness the spirit of FAMU, and if they were ever on the fence about what school to attend, the show seals the deal,” Webb said.

Webb said the FAMU Connection performs crowd pleasers such as “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke and “Grown Woman” by Beyoncé

The success of the recruitment performances has piqued prospective high school students’ interest in joining the FAMU Connection when accepted at FAMU.

“The FAMU Connection continues to be a useful tool because students connect more with being shown why they should choose FAMU,” said Alonda Thomas, interim executive assistant to the president. “I was a former FAMU Connection performer, and this form of recruitment resonates with students who want to attend FAMU.”

The recruitment fair will take place at 9800 International Drive at 9:30 a.m. To RSVP, call 850-599-3183, and contact the office of enrollment management at 850-599-3512 for additional information.
