The Greek organizations showed up and showed out at the National Pan-Hellenic Council Greek Step Show Thursday, putting on quite a show for the audience.
The organizations that performed and competed in the step show were Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. were in attendance, but did not compete in the show.
Some members of the organizations believed the step show would be a must-see performance.
“You’re in for a sweet treat,” said Whitney Tolbert, a fourth-year broadcast journalism student from Atmore, Ala., and member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. “All of the sororities worked very hard and I am very excited about tonight.”
Every competing organization performed a routine with a specific theme. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc. started the show off as superheroes, then members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. were insane patients in the “AKAsylum.”
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. recreated the hit MTV show “Catfish” with “SlickFish.” Then, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. performed using a theme from the popular video game “Candy Crush Saga,” and Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. transformed one of their own members from geek to chic with a Steve Urkel theme.
Members of the Beta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. jumped and screamed with excitement after they were announced the winning sorority.
“We are super excited about our win,” said Tanisha Bryan, a senior history student, and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. “We worked so hard, practicing every day sometimes three and four hours a day.” Bryan said it was her line sisters who inspired the theme of the “AKAsylum.”
The Beta Nu Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. won first place for the fraternities.
“This win is unbelievable,” said Nick Barren, a third-year information system student and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. member. “We put a lot of work in our performance, countless hours of practice every night and we just put it all on the stage.”
Barren said that the “desire to be the best” was the inspiration for the performance.
Many audience members also enjoyed the show.
Ashley Baker, a senior social work student from Memphis, Tenn., said she was thankful that she attended the show.
The show was great,” Baker said. “I am so happy that I decided to come this year. Every organization was awesome. They really stepped it up from last year’s show, and I am happy for the winners.”
