107th Mr. and Miss FAMU crowned

The audience stood and applauded as the 2013-2014 Mr. and Miss Florida A&M University waved from the stage in Lee Hall Auditorium with sparkling crowns and smiling faces.

Ronnie Mackey Jr. and Camille Baker were crowned at the 107th coronation Sunday.

Lyndsi Caldwell, a FAMU alumna and former Miss Graduate Attendant 2012-2013, said the ceremony is noteworthy time.

“Being a past royal court member and knowing the preparations it takes and knowing the rich history makes it so special,” Caldwell said. “I’m always excited to see the (royal) court. It’s such a special time.”

FAMU students, faculty, alumni and other individuals in the Tallahassee community attended to honor Mr. and Miss FAMU.

“I think coronation is a wonderful way to show the hard work and dedication that the royal court members display,” said Annalise Anise, a third-year pharmacy student and presidential ambassador from Mobile, Ala.

The night consisted of a prayer, an address to the audience from Interim President Larry Robinson, music and singing from the department of music and a performance by the Mahogany Dance Theatre.

“Coronation was amazing,” said Ashley Lipscomb, a fourth-year pharmacy student from Rockledge, Fla., and Miss Graduate Attendant. “I really enjoyed Mahogany’s dance performance. I’m so elated that I have received the opportunity to serve as graduate attendant. It was an honor to be a part of the coronation tonight.”

The Royal Court was introduced, and Mr. and Miss FAMU gave their speeches with tears of joy as they thanked their family, friends and supporters for accomplishments thus far.

Following the coronation ceremony, family, friends and students went to the Grand Ballroom to watch Mr. and Miss FAMU, as well as different organizations’ kings and queens perform the waltz, dance and enjoy dinner and dessert.

Baker said the coronation was “a dream come true.”

“Tonight was filled with love,” said Baker, a fourth-year business student from Orlando. “I have always dreamed of becoming Miss FAMU. I want to thank each and everyone that shared such a special evening with me.”
