Florida A&M students and faculty celebrated the life of former football player Jonathan Ferrell in a somber ceremony Thursday. His family and former teachers paid tribute to his many accolades as a player for the school’s team, praising him as a fun-loving and hard-working person.

These tributes injected moments of raucous laughter and apparent admiration into the largely serious service for the 24-year-old Ferrell. He was remembered as a practical joker.

A police officer shot and killed Ferrell in Charlotte, N.C. The officer has since been charged with voluntary manslaughter.
