Dance competition, hair show added to homecoming

Homecoming is approaching, and Florida A&M is revamping a few events.

“The big thing this year that we’re trying to do is make homecoming not just fun for the students or alumni but for everyone,” said Jaliah Gilcrease, student secretary of the Homecoming Committee. “We’re trying to make everyone come together and participate and enjoy themselves throughout the week.”

The revamping also includes adding a new event to the schedule. FAMU will introduce a new dance competition called “FAMU’s Best Dance Crew.”

The competition will involve various dance groups and organizations around campus, and the winner of the competition will be determined by the total number of votes.

Marvin Green Jr., director of student activities, said he added this event to give student dance organizations a platform to show their skills.

“We have a lot of talented clubs and organizations on campus,” Green said. “We’re known around campus for our dance groups and dance troupes. We want to give them a chance to showcase their talent during homecoming week.”

The homecoming fashion show will also have a new addition. It will be both a fashion and hair show.

Amisha Murray, a FAMU alumna, said she is excited about the hair portion of the event.

“I think adding a hair scene to the fashion show is a great idea,” Murray said. “It also gives the show more of a variety. Hair is such a big deal these days. Incorporating it with fashion is like the best of both worlds.”

Homecoming week begins Oct. 12 with the coronation and the Coronation Ball. The events will take place in Lee Hall Auditorium and the Grand Ballroom beginning at 7 p.m.
