Men’s tennis sweeps B-CU, women lose close match

The Florida A&M men’s tennis team beat Bethune-Cookman University 4-0 on Saturday.

In the singles competition, senior Salif Kante of Dakar, Senegal, defeated B-CU’s Juan Varon (6-3. 6-0). Junior Zack Evenden of London defeated B-CU’s Kip Jackson (6-3, 6-1).

“We play as a team,” Evenden said. “No one stuck out. Everyone stepped up to get their win and get the job done.”

The men swept all three doubles matches.

The Lady Rattlers won three singles matches. Elysia Ortiz defeated B-CU’s Maria Dimitrova (6-0, 3-6, 7-5), while Shani Williams defeated B-CU’s Victoria Galyaeva (6-0, 6-3). Victoria Williams was also successful as she defeated Laura Rodriguez (6-3, 6-3).

In the doubles competition, senior Bethany Holt of Nashville, Tenn., and freshman Symone Townsend of Chicago defeated Gaby Chinchilla and Chinatsu Kajiwara 8-5. The Lady Rattlers tied the match 3-3 before Chinchilla served the final match point giving Bethune the series win.

The Rattlers will travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take their final swing at winning the 2013 MEAC championships, which begins Friday.

“The only gameplan is to turn up and go on the court and get the MEAC championship,” Evenden said.
