First defendant in hazing case sentenced to 2 years probation

Brian Jones has been sentenced to two years probation and six months community service for his role in the hazing-related death of drum major Robert Champion.

Judge Marc Lubet said that Jones’ role in the death was minimal and Jones did not hit or beat Champion.

On Oct. 9 Jones entered a no-contest plea for his involvement after originally pleading not guilty.

Champion died in November as a result of multiple beatings from fellow band members on a bus after the Orlando Classic football game.

Eleven other defendants have trials slated to begin in March.
