New restaurant brings old style flavor

Casual dining, beer and wine! These are three options that are available at new Midtown restaurant Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza that opened earlier this month.

At Joe Mama’s, the dough of the pizza is prepared fresh daily at 10 a.m. and through a 48-hour fermentation period, the flavor starts to develop. A couple of things that make Joe Mama’s unique are the homemade recipes and pizza, which is cooked over a wood fired oven. “Some of the ingredients used in the restaurant are imported directly from Italy said Devon Nunneley, the co-manager of Joe Mama’s.

As a patron of this contemporary-style establishment, you can even see your pizza being made right in front of you.

Nunneley described the restaurant as being an “upscale artesian pizza restaurant” and said it was perfect for a date night. Nunneley also said that the restaurant caters to a mix of students and working professionals.

Katie Mook, a Tallahassee native and Florida State alumna, said that food was good and also said that she is very happy to have another pizza place in Tallahassee.

“I am so excited,” Mook said. “ There is nothing better than enjoying a good meal that has original food.”

Tallahassee is the second home of Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza, as its original location is in Port St. Joe. Joe Mama’s is also a family-owned business and the Port St. Joe location is owned by Nunneley’s parents. Because her father is a chef by trade and is accustomed to making homemade pizzas, Nunneley said that her parents then decided to open a restaurant.

Nunneley, who is from South Florida, said that Port St. Joe was a frequent vacation spot and therefore her family thought it would be a great place to open Joe Mama’s.

Now, Nunneley and her brother manage the Tallahassee location.

When asked the reason for opening a location in Tallahassee, Nunneley said that many of her Port St. Joe customers were from Tallahassee and that she and her family just loved Tallahassee.

Joe Mama’s has an array of flavored pizzas. One of its most popular meals is the Due house specialty pie. This consists of San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella and Romano cheese, Italian sausage, roasted peppers and caramelized onions for $14.50. For those 21-years-old and older, you can receive a draft flight of four 4-ounce ports for $6.50.

Mike Roberts, a customer, said he really enjoyed the craft beer selection. He also said that Joe Mama’s had a great atmosphere.

“The feeling at this place reminds me of a quaint spot back home, Roberts said. “ I am so happy that there is a new place to come and hang with good friends and enjoy good conversations.”

The average price of a pizza at Joe Mama’s is $11.50 with an additional $1-3 for toppings. You can also have the option of making your own pizza. Their 12 inch (8 sliced) pizzas can serve 1-2 adults.

This establishment can seat up to 80-88 people. Within the next few months, outdoor seating will become available. Joe Mama’s Wood Fired Pizza is open for dinner only.

Its Tallahassee location is 1307 N. Monroe St. Call (850) 577-1231 for more information.
