This Thursday, Coach to Host Celebrity Golf Tournament to Support FAMU Basketball

NBA championship winner and FAMU men’s basketball head coach Clemon Johnson is inviting all golfers to participate in the Inaugural Clemon Johnson Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The event is scheduled for this Thursday at the Southwood Golf Club.

All proceeds will be distributed by the FAMU Foundation to benefit the men’s Rattler basketball program. The funds will be used to purchase practice gear and equipment, and for recruitment purposes, among other expenses. In addition to fundraising, the tournament is expected to build community relationships and get supporters for FAMU Athletics.

“I’m trying to make a win-win situation with what we’re doing,” said Johnson. Additionally, entry fees and donations are considered as charity contributions and are tax deductible, according to section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

The entry fee is $100 for individual golfers. For companies that wish to enter a team, a corporate foursome is offered for $500 entry. It includes four playing spots and the company name displayed in the tournament program and on a sign at either the putting green or tee box. Check, Visa or MasterCard is accepted.

While Rattler participation is hugely encouraged, Johnson is hoping that all interested golf fans participate, regardless of school affiliation or skill level. Johnson said: “I’m trying to get a diverse group; I don’t want this to just be Famuans. Famuans, TCC, Florida State, the local high school golfers, anyone who wants to come out and just play golf and have an enjoyable time, please join us is the message I’m sending out.” Johnson is also expecting a few of his former teammates and pals from the NBA to participate in the tournament.

According to Johnson, the Southwood Golf Club is able to accommodate up to 140 golfers for the event. “Now, I’m also told that if I got up to 48 people for the first year, that would be an awesome turnout, but I’m looking to max it out.” Johnson said.

Carts and range balls will be provided and all golfers will receive a meal before and after the tournament.

First, second and third-place winners of the tournament will be presented with a trophy. There will also be a trophy for the golfer with the longest drive. All participants will receive a goody bag and qualify to win free gifts through raffles and give-a-ways. “Regardless of whether you win the tournament or not,” Johnson said, “you’ll walk away a winner.”

Range/warm-up will commence at 7:30 a.m. with tee times starting at 9:30 a.m.
