County approves Operation Thank You

Leon County will honor local members of the Armed Forces and Veterans during May’s “Operation Thank You.”

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners approved the event on March 13.

Friday, May 18, post-Sept. 11 local armed forces members and veterans will be honored in downtown Tallahassee.

“When I initially brought this idea to the commission, the concept was to host an event that recognizes and honors the members of our community who have made the pledge to protect the freedoms we all enjoy and those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for those freedoms,” said County Commissioner John Dailey. “I’m proud that we have full support and are moving forward.”

The event, similar to other downtown block parties, will have live music, food and beverage vendors, and activities.

“This event is in keeping with our long tradition of supporting our local military and veteran communities,” said County Commission Chairman Akin Akinyemi. “We wanted to have a community wide event that commemorates the selfless acts of our military and veterans. We thought it would be a fitting tribute to hold the event on the same weekend in which our nation celebrates Armed Forces Day.”

“This is an opportunity to show our veterans how  important they are to our community.” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long.
