Women’s flag football heads to Hattiesburg

Simply Marvelous will be competing in the American Collegiate Intramural Sports tournament in Hattiesburg, Miss.

The team has already qualified for the ACIS national championship again. The tournament will be played tomorrow and Sunday.

The offense averaged over 21 points per game throughout the last tournament. The team was really turning on all cylinders. The defense pitched four consecutive shutouts that weekend and had several defensive scores as well. This was the best performance that the team had in any tournament this season. The team will need more performances like this if they want to finish this season as dual national champions again.

One of the reasons that the team was so productive last tournament was freshman quarterback Erika Collins. The Tallahassee native was tournament MVP and accounted for many of the team’s scores. She had an efficient season and had be one of the team’s key players as of late.

“I expect that we should be successful and win the tournament if all minds are together and we play like we know how to,” Collins said. “We take every game one step at a time and stay hungry.”

Another player that team will be looking for a big performance from is senior April Roberts from Tampa. She is the team’s starting running back and one of their senior leaders.

“At the end of our season we are six time national champions,” Roberts said. “I feel that we are well prepared for that level (the championship).”

Collins and Roberts plan to hold the team down on the offensive end and on defense senior captain Asia Evans and defensive rusher from Tampa has got it covered. The defense is fired up for the tournament this weekend and has been all season not allowing more than 14 points in any contest this season.

“Even though we haven’t spent a lot of time together due to the holiday break we have enough knowledge to kick back into gear,” Evans said. “We have two more days to practice some new assignments but I’m excited to test it out this weekend.”

The team is wrapping up their season and has the two championship tournaments left after this weekend. They have a record of 9-2 on the season and will look to improve upon it at this tournament.
