FAMU prepares for 5k walk to raise health awareness

Florida A&M is getting ready to kick off Homecoming 2010 on a healthy note. The 2010 Rattler 5K Urban Challenge and Wellness Expo takes place Saturday, Oct. 23.

The FAMU recreational center, the Army ROTC, Navy ROTC and the Student Health Services have come together to organize the 5K-spiritrun. Registration cost $5, and begins 7:30 a.m., Saturday, on the Set.  Contestants of all ages; FAMU, Florida State University and Tallahassee Community College students, faculty and staff; and the Tallahassee community are welcome join.

The race begins on the Set at 8 a.m. and continues throughout the entire campus, to the stadium, off Gamble Street, up the pharmacy hill, back to the set and the final destination will be at the FAMU Park. Participants can choose to run or walk with or without the different obstacles along the path.

Fitness Coordinator at the FAMU Recreational Center, Chip Heimbach, said the event is highly anticipated.

“I am extremely excited because this is the first race of this kind that I know of. I’m excited to see the collaboration of different departments,” said Heimbach. “I think the event is going to be excellent. Many people haven’t been on the campus and do not know how beautiful it is and what we have to offer.”

The wellness expo begins at 8:30 a.m. This expo will include martial arts, skating and healthy cooking demonstrations, as well as information on diabetes, obesity and the importance of staying active.

There will be lots of fun and excitement for the entire family. Kids fun run, face painting and bounce houses. Gift cards, free massages, gift baskets with 2k11 Play Station 3 games, movies and different products for women will be available for the adults and cash prizes for the top winners and great food provided by Subway for everyone.
