ECOnscious week encourages students to become more eco-friendly

The next few days will be an opportunity to become more environmentally conscious.

Florida A&M’s Green Coalition kicked off Econscious ndays this week for those who strive to make campus more environmentally friendly.

The organization is reaching out to the students by encouraging them to be more conscious of the decisions and learn the different ways in which they affect the
economy.

Between today and Friday, students and the rest of the FAMU community will have an opportunity to gain insight into the lack of water resources and its connection with african-american youth. Participants will also learn the advantages of hybrid vehicles and get
a taste organic food.

LaRae Donellan, adviser of the Green Coalition since 2006, said the Green Coalition views this week as a continuation of The Green Week Summit event that took place this past fall.

This initiative was geared towards the educational side of being eco-friendly. This time they wanted it to be student centered, bringing appeal to “being green” and making it “cool.”

“We also want students to understand the connection between what they eat and its impact on the environment,” said Donnellan. This is one of the reasons the organization is starting the week off with an “Organic Lunch,” served in the School of Journalism.

This event will give students a chance to sample organic food, the Green Coalition would like for this to perhaps encourage students to change their eating habits.

Donnellan said she really wants students to take advantage of all the activities provided and take this time to deliberate on the small decisions such as eating habits and choice of cleaning supplies.

They are also having a Green Lifestyle Workshop.

This event will concentrate on saving money on utility bills and creating your own green-cleaning supplies.

For those considering buying a new car in the near future, there will also be a Hybrid Car Demonstration in the School of Business and Industry West Parking Lot, where hybrid cars will be on display and presented by Tallahassee Ford Lincoln Mercury.

“We have worked very hard to put this program together and I’m really hoping for a great turnout,” said Kokeeta McLendon, FAMU Green Coalition vice president.

McLendon said they have events lined up designed to appeal to everyone on campus.

Free drinks and prizes are also in store for the week.
