The Florida A&M men’s basketball team wins against Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks

The Florida A&M men’s basketball team (6-18 overall, 3-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) has lost only one game this year when it has led at halftime.

They believe that starting a game is just as important as finishing it.

The Rattlers’ 80-71 victory against the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks (7-18 overall, 5-6 in the MEAC) on Saturday was no different. The team won because they started the game strong and they were able to get an early lead on the Hawks.

Florida A&M had four of its five starting players score in double digits in the win on Saturday and junior forward Larry Jackson led the team in scoring with 18 points.

Junior guard Rasheem Jenkins had a team high of 5 assists in the win, and he believes the game came down to who wanted it more.

“We just did everything right, I felt everyone was themselves,” Jenkins said. “We wanted it more and I just tried to lead the pack for 40 minutes.”

The game on Saturday served as an example of what the Rattlers can do with two halves are put together properly. When the Rattlers have struggled this season, it has been hard to come from behind on any opponent.

Jenkins knows that when the Rattlers get out to a good start, they have a better chance at victory. He said getting out to an early lead is crucial for a win.

“It’s important to start off strong and build an early lead because you don’t want to get behind and have to play catch up,” Jenkins said.

The Rattlers have had success this season when they have the lead, it’s when they have to come from behind that gives the team problems. The basketball team is 5-1 in games in which they have had the lead at halftime.

The only game they lost when they had the lead at half was against the Rider University Broncos in Cancun, Mexico.

The Rattlers obtained a two-point lead at halftime, but lost the game 88-73.

The victory on Saturday gave the Rattlers their third conference win of the season.

Jenkins believes that the team can grab more victories in the remaining games this year if the team can play like they did on Saturday.

Maintaining an early lead is important for the team, but Jenkins said his team has to also play in a way that tailors to their strengths.

“In the next game we have to do what we can do and we need to play to our strengths,” Jenkins said.

The Rattlers will play the Delaware State University Hornets in their next game.
