Flag football team in the hunt for title

The Florida A&M University women’s flag football team, Simply Marvelous, is now preparing to play in two national championships after dominating the 2009 ACIS Football Regional Tournament at the University of Florida.

“We strive to be the best and beat the best,” said Ayanis Dennis, a fourth-year broadcast journalism student from Fort Lauderdale.

The total points for the entire tournament for Simply Marvelous were 125 and their opponents combined totaled for only 13 points.

Simply Marvelous played three games before going into the championship round. Their first game was a 40-0 shutout victory against Valdosta State. Their next game was a 25-0 shutout victory West Florida.The last game before the championship was against Southern and Simply Marvelous won 27-6.

The championship was between Simply Marvelous and the University of South Florida and Simply Marvelous won 33-7.  The MVP for the tournament was Ruby Nugent.

Playing in the Tallahasee City League meant playing against men.  Simply Marvelous did not shy away from the compeitions. They finished their city league with a record of 5-3.

“Playing against men is a challenge and it made us become a better team when playing against women,” Dennis said. “It helped prepare us for our upcoming National Championships.”

April Roberts, a fourth year cardiopulmonary science student from Tampa, said that playing against men was a great experience for future success.

“It taught us that as a team, we work well with each other, and that we have a strong bond between each other…and that we have to practice, practice, and practice some more,” Roberts said.

Their next tournament is the NCCS Regional Flag Football Championships in Hattiesburg, Miss., Dec. 5-6.

“I believe we are well prepared for nationals,” Roberts said. “We are ready again to bring back two more National Championships.”

Simply Marvelous will be playing in are the NIRSA Championship in Tampa and the ACIS Championship in New Orleans.
