In recent news, a 47-year-old Saudi Arabian man married an 8-year-old girl.
According to the lawyer, the little girl’s father arranged the marriage in order to settle his debts with the man, who is “a close friend” of his.
The judge did ask for a pledge from the husband, who was in court, not to consummate the marriage until the girl reaches puberty, according to al-Jutaili.
The judge ruled that when the girl reaches puberty, she will have the right to request a divorce by filing a petition with the court, the lawyer said.
Christoph Wilcke, an Arabian researcher for Human Rights Watch said his organization has heard many other cases of child marriages, according to CNN.com
At first the judge overturned the ruling and annulled the marriage, which the young girl’s mother hoped for.
Afterwards the mother went to the United Nations and eventually got the marriage decreed.
This situation is very strange.
Even though it is in another country, things like this should never occur.
It seems as though the father did not have enough respect or love for his own daughter.
This bothers me, when ungrateful people like this are blessed with children.
The poor mother had to suffer and see her child go through this sad situation.
This makes me proud to be an American because of the laws that we have put in place to protect our kids.
