Graduation rate jumps in 2008

This fall, 702 Florida A&M University students will graduate; this is a 4 percent increase from the fall 2007 graduating class of 672.

Henry Kirby, the commencement chair said normally during the fall semester, the range varies from 650 to 750 graduates. Though 702 students will graduate, everyone may not participate in the ceremony. There are 539 students receiving their Bachelor’s degree, 110 receiving their Master’s degree, 45 receiving their Jurist Doctorate, and eight will receive their Ph.Ds.

After two years, 18 some students will receive their associate degrees, but will not be included in the total count because they will most likely continue to pursue their four-year degree, Kirby said.

Graduates will gather to participate in the fall commencement ceremony at the Leon County Civic Center at 5:40 p.m. on Dec. 12. The program starts at 6 p.m.

Kirby said the spring semester’s graduation usually over 1,000 to 1,200 graduates,” said Kirby, who presides over commencement meetings throughout the year.

Mandatory graduation rehearsal will be Thursday, Dec. 11 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Civic Center followed by the president’s reception in FAMU’s Grand Ballroom at 7p.m, Kirby said. At the rehearsal, the president and his leadership team will greet the graduates and their families, with food catered by Sodexho.

All graduates and their families are invited to attend and no tickets are required.
