Meeting aims for retention

The three buses to Atlanta were packed. Student Government officials expect the buses to be full again when they roll off the hill on the way to Baton Rouge for the Oct. 18 game against Southern University.

The trip costs $85 per student and is designed to make sure that Florida A&M University has a significant show of support for the game. The student government also plans to organize a trip for the Florida Classic in Orlando on Nov. 22, when FAMU plays Bethune Cookman University, according Senate President Ricquel Jackson. Tickets for that excursion cost $70, she said.

Plans for the Southern trip were among the issues discussed during a three-hour long Student Senate meeting on Monday.

In other matters, Gregory Woodall, 22, a senior physics major from Atlanta, was appointed the chief of staff of the FAMU administration. His duties include serving as an advisor to the Student Body President’s Cabinet. Woodall will coordinate all executive branch activities. He will also sit in on all executive branch meetings that require contract negotiations.

“This is a great opportunity to serve students in an indirect way. It allows me to use previous skills I’ve acquired from my participation in SGA. Ensuring that the posterity of the student body is fulfilled is one of my main goals,” Woodall said. “I want to leave the student body with a fully, well functioning student government.”

Senators also appointed Chris Weaver, 21, a senior criminal justice student from Pompano Beach, as the associate chief justice of the Supreme Court.

His duty entails filling in for the chief justice who presides over cases in judicial procedures.

“I didn’t know the senators would vote the way that they did,” Weaver said. “I feel very excited to work for the students.”

Senators confirmed Chynna Kelley as chief justice of student traffic court. Kelley, 20, is a junior pre-law political science student from Tampa.

“I’m excited. As a freshman I always wanted to be apart of SGA judicial branch,” Kelley said. “As a sophomore I became associate justice and to advance this quickly is an honor. I encourage all students to pursue any organization they’d like to be apart of.”

As chief justice of student traffic court, Kelley is responsible for overseeing the court and making sure everything is run smoothly.

“Court is important to students because unjust tickets are given everyday.

Students are encouraged to appeal,” Kelley said. “They have five days after the ticket is given to report the appeal to parking services.”

During the marathon meeting, the Elections & Appointment Committee reminded those in attendance about the approaching Oct. 6 voter registration deadline. Early voting begins on Oct. 20.

Senators also announced that the Founders Day Convocation would be held October 3, at 10:10 a.m. in Lee Hall.

Bills from last year and this year will be presented to the Board of Trustees for approval On Oct. 7.

Senator Calvin Hayes announced that not only senators but students as well are able to write bills and resolutions.

Bills must include a senator sponsor and all requests should be emailed to Famusgajudicialrules@gmail.com
