FAMU’s Deltas win ‘Big Give’ competition

After weeks of fund raising efforts, it was announced Monday that the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. defeated the Kappa Sigma Chapter at Florida State University in a charity competition in hopes to gain a spot on “Oprah’s Big Give.”

The Deltas raised a total of $6,100.70 through raffle ticket sales, a basketball tournament, a community talent show and several outside monetary donations.

For Bethany Jones, the Beta Alpha Chapter of DST president and past fund raising chair, the competition was a different experience for the chapter.

“In all competitions you do go in with the mentality to win. However, this one was a little different,” Jones said. “We were in unfamiliar territory because it was not like a step show competition. We competed against another organization at FSU that we knew nothing about.”

However, receiving support from others made the competition worthwhile.

“It felt great that we could affect so many people from across the nation,” Jones said. “It also felt good to know that people donated to us during the ABC telethon that didn’t even know us – it was really great.”

Jones said that WTXL ABC 27 will send off clips of the chapter’s fund raising efforts and then they will find out if they will be featured on ‘Big Give.’

According to a recent ABC 27 news post, Gary Wordlaw, general manager of ABC 27, presented the FAMU Deltas with a check for $6,000. The Deltas will be using the money for their Delta Success Fund.

The Kappa Sigma chapter received a check for $4,000.
