Deltas kick fundraising into high gear

Fundraising has been top priority all week for the Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Competing for a spot on “Oprah’s Big Give,” a reality show on ABC, the Deltas of Florida A&M University have been raising money to beat the Kappa Sigma fraternity of Florida State University.

Coming up for the Deltas is afundraising event this Friday. The “BADST Makeover” is the name of the Deltas’ latest fundraising effort, and Amanda Albert, 22, said it is sure to be a blast.

“It’s targeted toward freshmen,” said Albert, a senior public relations student who has been a Delta since Spring 2007.

Albert said the Deltas have been selling raffle tickets for $2. From the raffle, two men and two women will be chosen for a complete makeover that will take place Friday. Afterward, both male and female winners will receive the ‘all-star’ treatment in the form of a chauffeur driving them to an all-expense paid dinner at a surprise location.

Albert said the proceeds will go directly to its fundraising efforts. She also said the idea of receiving a makeover should be motivating.

“It will encourage people to go out on dates since a lot of people say that chivalry is dead,” Albert said. “I think it will also promote self-esteem.”

Albert also said the Deltas are looking to turning their makeover contest into an annual event. In order to beat their opponents, the Deltas have been working hard all week to raise more money. Albert said it was an honor to have been chosen.

“It’s a great opportunity that we were chosen to participate in this activity,” Albert said. “We’re just very excited.”

The Deltas will host a three-on-three basketball tournament on Friday at 6 p.m. at the FAMU basketball courts. All proceeds will go towards Oprah’s Big Give with ABC 27.

The Deltas will conclude their fundraising April 6.
