New FAMU payroll system allows for self sufficience

Florida A&M University’s switch from the Legacy Payroll System to Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capitol Management took place Jan. 4.

FAMU’s previous system relied heavily on manual paper-based tasks for the routine transactions, as stated by a press released received from the Office of Public Affairs. With PeopleSoft, FAMU is able to automate many of these processes on its own through self-service features. These features allow employees to view and print payroll and compensation information such as paycheck stubs, direct deposit and W-4 forms.

“The only difference between this new system and the old system is that the state used to control and cut checks, now FAMU is cutting their own checks,” said Physical Plant Coordinator Carla Hills.

Hills said this new system will be an asset to FAMU.

FAMU began working with Oracle Consulting in September 2007 under the leadership of University President James H. Ammons to ensure the completion and success of the new payroll system.

“This is an outstanding accomplishment, and I applaud the hard work of each department and our close relationship with Oracle Consulting,” Ammons said.

Teresa Hardee, FAMU’s chief financial officer and vice president for administrative Fiscal Affairs, was also pleased with the outcome of the University’s hard work to install the new system.

“It was truly one of the finest examples of teamwork that I have ever seen,” Hardee said.

As stated by University officials, this new system with PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capitol Management was established to improve operational efficiency while also delivering enhanced services to employees.

“PeopleSoft Enterprise Financial Management interfaces with our People Soft Financial Management System to give employees greater visibility and accessibility to their Human Resource benefits and other payroll-related information,” said Robert Seniors, vice president for Enterprise Information Technology.

To gain new functionality, FAMU plans on utilizing its models within the PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capitol Management Suite, including reporting and self-service capabilities.

The new system also provides employees with the opportunity to view, update or add personal information such as home and mailing addresses, emergency contacts, e-mail addresses and phone numbers.

Marcus Bryant Sr., postmaster coordinator, said he likes the new system.

“It’s less complicated because it gives vivid details on statements, while giving departments immediate access to the payroll system, making the turnaround time much shorter,” he said.

Officials at public affairs said this new payroll system provides new tools to effectively manage employee statistics and trends to enhance analysis and planning activities. Since the implementation of PeopleSoft Enterprise Human Capitol Management, productivity and efficiency will continue to increase at FAMU.
