Safety first, always a must

Just when we thought it was safe to walk the streets of Tallahassee, violence strikes again.

Recently, there have been a series of shootings around Tallahassee, and they all seemed to take place at locations that cater to college students.

About two weeks ago, there was a shooting in the Palmetto Phase III apartment complex. Since then, there has been other shootings, one at Adam’s Place and another at Sunrise Apartments. The most recent episodes have taken place at University Courtyard Apartments and Gibbs male dormitory this past weekend.

Students need to be cautious about the people visiting their apartments and attending their parties.

The University Courtyard shooting was ignited by an altercation at a party in the complex, and the shooting at Phase III also started as a result of an altercation.

Here at The Famuan, we believe that the safety of Florida A&M University students is in jeopardy.

Gun violence is becoming a terrible trend in Tallahassee. So far none of the shootings have been fatal, but what happens when it does? We do not want our campus or town to be on the same list as Columbine and Virginia Tech.

Tallahassee is a college town, and it should be a town in which student’s focus should be on learning, not trying to avoid violent activity. We have all come to college for a reason, and that reason does not include putting our lives at risk.

There is obviously a need for an increase in security.
