‘Sleep Out for the Vote’ proves students can unite

The Tallahassee Democrat said about 700 students from Tallahassee’s three major universities and colleges gathered Wednesday at the Leon County Civic Center to support the “Sleep Out for the Vote Extravaganza.”

Sleep Out for the Vote was a sleepover after which students marched to the Leon County Courthouse for early voting Thursday morning.

It is great that students, regardless of where we attend school, stood together for a good cause. The Democrat reported that about 50 people, mostly students, walked from the Civic Center to the Courthouse to vote early.

Students have more power than we know. We can influence change in just about every facet of life in Tallahassee. This is a college town; in other words, Tallahassee revolves around us – the student body.

We should all vote Tuesday but not because of peer pressure. You should not vote because everyone else is doing it. You should vote because you wish to exercise your right to do so in the hope that your vote will make a difference.

Inform yourself about the candidates running and any other issues on the ballot before going into the voting booth Tuesday. Random voting deceives the purpose.

Perhaps we should have another Sleep Out for the Vote tonight. It seemed to work so well Wednesday.

Regardless of what you intend to do tonight, make sure you vote Tuesday.
