Afternoon convocation a low priority for students

The Annual President’s Convocation has been changed from Sunday, Sept. 24 at 4p.m. to Friday, Sept. 22 at 3p.m. This change is probably an attempt to get students in Gaither Gym without missing classes. But does this really mean students will come?

President’s Convocation has never been a real draw for attendance. The only reason people care about convocation is they know they will have a get-out-of-class free card. Though President’s Convocation is an important event that students should be encouraged to attend, it is not something people go out of their way to attend.

At 3 p.m. on a Friday afternoon most people are getting out of classes, heading out to get their edge-ups and their ‘hair did’ for the night’s festivities. Others are still on The Set listening to the music or trying to make their final purchases before the vendors leave. Others are just trying to head home, pass out on their beds and put a long week of classes behind them.

Whatever the case, no one is thinking about school or school-related functions, which include, but are not limited to, President’s Convocation.

And it’s not like students can’t find out what happened at the President’s Convocation in the next edition of The Famuan. So unless the convocation is going to be moved again, Bryant better be prepared to listen to the sound of crickets.
