Rattler baseball gets soaked, outscored by Dolphins 18-1

The Florida A&M University baseball team fell to Jacksonville University 18-1 in their season opener at Moore-Kittles Field Wednesday afternoon.

JU (1-0) struck first as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning, when Daniel Murphy doubled to score Pete Clifford and Logan James. JU would score two more runs in the inning on a double by Matt Lopez to make the score 4-0.

JU scored three runs in the second inning, when Thomas LePage doubled to score Murphy and James, giving JU a 7-0 lead.

FAMU (0-1) scored their only run in the second inning on a David James sacrifice fly to score Anthony Mazzeo from third.

JU went on to score three runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, three runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth. JU finished the game with nine doubles.

Kyle DeVries (1-0) of JU in four innings of work gave up two hits, one run and one earned run. Blair Mercer (0-1) suffered his first loss of the season, giving up eight hits, 10 runs and six earned runs in two innings of work.

FAMU only tabbed five hits for the game with Peter Guastella leading the way with two hits in four at bats, Stanley Gnat, Chris Lee and Mazzeo all finished with one hit.

JU garnered 16 hits on the day. Gronkowski and LePage had three hits each, Logan, Lopez, and Murphy finished with two hits apiece, Pete Clifford, Justin Young, finished with one hit apiece.

FAMU will travel to Macon, Ga., to take on the Mercer University Bears for a three-game series starting Friday at 4 p.m.

The two teams will play Saturday at 1 p.m. and will wrap up the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
