Lady Rattlers win back to back after routing Spartans

It took 19 games, but the women’s basketball team has finally won consecutive games with its 71-56 victory over Norfolk State Saturday.

The win moves the Lady Rattlers into a tie for fourth place in the MEAC with a 6-5 record and improves their overall record to 8-11.

For the fifth time this season, senior forward Ariel Towns led the Lady Rattlers in both scoring and rebounding, with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow senior Quidara Russell added 13 points and eight rebounds as the Lady Rattlers outscored the Lady Spartans 37-22 in the second half to earn its tenth victory in 13 games in the series.

Center Shalynn Leonard, who was one of three Lady Spartans to score in double figures, led all scorers with 18 points in 29 minutes of action.

The Lady Rattlers took advantage of the league’s worst defense in terms of shooting percentage, making 42 percent of its shots in the second half as they never trailed in the final 20 minutes.

The women will take on two-time defending conference champion and league leading Hampton today at 5:30 p.m. in Gaither Gymnasium. The Lady Pirates were upset 75-66 by Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach Saturday
