Volleyball team extends streak

The 25th-ranked Florida A&M women’s volleyball team extended its’ winning streak to 17 Thursday night, with a 3-0 match victory over the Jacksonville University Dolphins in a non-conference affair at the Jake Gaither Athletic Center.

Florida A&M (18-2), won 30-16, 30-18 and 30-18 behind the play of junior Adriana Kostadinova, who led the Lady Rattlers with 15 kills.

Tereza Arellano added 13 kills while Maria Andonova had 10 kills for FAMU Thursday.

Sophomore setter Diana Genkova, playing in place of injured senior Mariela Portocarrero, finished the match with 43 assists.

Freshman Rosa Rojas led FAMU with 15 digs, while Genkova added 11 digs and Andreina Ruiz finished with 10.

FAMU heads to the Carolinas for a weekend Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference swing.

Saturday, the Lady Rattlers took on South Carolina State and Sunday, they faced North Carolina A&T.

Adriana Kostadinova was tabbed MEAC Player of the Week for period of October 18-23.

FAMU women’s volleyball team remained in the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association Top 25 Poll this week, keeping the #25 spot for the second straight week.

FAMU (17-2) had won 16 straight matches coming into Thursday’s match at home against Jacksonville.

Earlier this week, the Rattlers’ Kostadinova was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced.

Kostadinova (OH, 6-3, Sr., Sofia, Bulgaria) posted 24 kills, 10 digs and 4 blocks in a win over South Florida last week. Kostadinova’s .396 hitting percentage helped extend the 25th ranked Lady Rattlers’ win streak to 16.

This is the second time Kostadinova has been named player of the week and the fourth time a player from FAMU has received the award.
