Baseball team fall short to Bears in season opener

In the first game of the 2004 baseball season the Rattlers battled the Mercer University Bears in a very exciting game before falling 9-8.

The beginning of the game looked gloomy for the Rattlers as the Bears immediately jumped on the pitching of starter Mike Sills scoring four runs on five hits in the first three innings.

“I threw a lot of mistakes out there today and I paid for it,” Sills said.

Rattler Baseball Coach Joe Durant said the team had first game jitters, and made some mistakes, but they didn’t quit.

“We kept swinging our bats and we began putting the ball in play,” Durant said. “We had some new people in there … as the season goes on we will get better.”
