Women’s Golf Set for First Year

In the spring of 2002 the new women’s golf team adopted the motto “History in the making.” After the university’s move to Division 1-A, the women’s golf team was formed in order to meet the NCAA’s title four requirements.

The team held its first official interest meeting Sept. 10. Marvin Green, the newly appointed women’s coach and the current men’s coach, is enthusiastic about the upcoming season.

“We are passionate about the opportunity to have a black women’s golf team,” Green said.

Because the decision was so late in the season, Green has decided to wait and formally start the golf team next fall. Therefore, the ladies will have one year to enhance their skills.

“Teamwork will be the foundation for this year. These first group of girls will be the basis for the Fall 2004,” Green said.

This spring the women’s golf team plans to warm up against Alabama State, Bethune-Cookman and Savannah State. Octavia Maxwell, a 19-year old business student, said she has been a golfer since she was five. Maxwell plans to be a part of FAMU’s 19th team sport.

“I was pushing for a women’s golf team since last semester,” Maxwell said. “When the news broke they were forming one, I was so excited.”

Although the team is still in it’s beginning stages, everyone involved is optimistic. The men’s team plans to support them in any way possible, according to Green.

“I am intrigued about being a part of the first women’s golf team,” said Amanda-Leigh, an 18-year-old business student. “My expectations are to have fun, meet people, and open doors for FAMU.”

Trice, who was on her high school golf team, said she is looking forward to the learning experience. Green said he wants to recruit as many women for the team as possible. He plans to attend at least three golf tours over the course of the year in which he will be looking for future prospects.

“We will be the first [Famu women’s Golf] team, and I know that will drive them,” Green said. “We are getting ready to really come out in ’04.”
