New activities director to be named soon

Student Activities is looking forward to filling its vacant director’s position as early as next month.

Filling the position has been delayed by presidential shake-ups and other high-ranking vacancies. There have been no designations made in the five vice presidential seats, the provost’s post, the deans of education and graduate studies and the recently vacated director for financial aid.

“There are a lot of things going on right now,” said university spokeswoman LaNedra Carroll.

Henry Kirby, associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students, has been the interim director for the past 14 months. The new director will replace Col. Ronald Joe, who resigned in late 2001 to take the director’s position in the FAMU Foundation.

“I can’t wait,” Kirby said. “Trying to do a balancing act with three duties is tiresome.”

Kirby said the search committee narrowed its list of potential candidates to 10,and when the list of candidates is received from search committee chairwoman Vivian Hobbs, he and Interim Vice President of Student Affairs Barbara Barrett will go through the list until a choice is made.

“Dean Kirby is doing an excellent job,” said Student Government Association President Andre Hammel. “I definitely appreciate and respect him and his staff for their dual roles.”

He said SGA has had no problems operating with the office of student activities on its events for the year.

“But our goal is to have the position filled.”
