Famuan Spring 2003 Job Descriptions

Visual Editor

1. Manage the art and layout staffs and supervise the photo editor. 2. Attend all scheduled meetings or appoint a representative from the section to attend the meetings, including budget and critique meetings. 3. Meet all production deadlines. 4. Work with section editors to monitor the section’s progress. 5. Monitor photo assignments. 6. Work with editors on visual packaging of newspaper. 7. Post office hours and be present during office hours. 8. Have weekly meetings with assistant editors to discuss plans for visuals. 9. Take full responsibility for the visual aspect of the newspaper, knowing what is going on with the section at all times and answering to the managing editor and, in turn, the editor in chief. 10. Recruit people for visual team. 11. Lead the lay out process. 12. Look at all pages before they are turned over to the copy desk. 13. Dummy all pages. 14, Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by editor in chief.

Section Editor

1. Post required number of budgets on time including slugs, names and numbers, suggested length, brief story description and graphic element.. 2. Attend all scheduled meetings or appoint a representative from the section to attend, including budget and critique meetings. 3. Edit each story in the section, checking for content and missing information. 4. Meet the copy flow schedule deadlines as outlined by the copy desk chief. 5. Oversee that wire and filler stories are placed in a folder for emergency use. 6. Submit graphic/photo requests a week prior to the issue date or no later than two days before the event occurs.. 7. Post office hours on the bulletin board and be present during office hours. 8. Schedule weekly meetings with assistant editors to discuss plans for the section. 9. Take full responsibility for the section of the newspaper, knowing what is going on with the section at all times and answering to the managing editor and, in turn, the editor in chief. 10. Meet all deadlines set by editor in chief. 11. Solicit stringers to cover various events and to provide a list of stringers for your section. 12. Propose long term section ideas during each budget meeting. 13. Make recommendations to the editor in chief concerning staff changes for your department. 14. Secure all media credentials for events, informing the editor in chief in writing as to who will receive The Famuan media credentials. 15. Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the editor in chief.

Photo Editor

Meet all production deadlines. 4. Work with section editors to monitor what photos section editors need and communicate with online editor concerning photography needs. 5. Monitor photo assignments. 6. Work with editors on visual packaging of newspaper. 7. Post office hours and be present during office hours. 8. Have weekly meetings with the assistant editor to discuss plans for photos. 9. Take full responsibility for the photo aspect of the newspaper, knowing what is going on with the section at all times and answering to the visual editor and, in turn, the editor in chief. 10. Recruit photographers to work on your team. 11. Train photo staff. 12. Take initiative to shoot wild art for each section, even without photo requests. 13. Take full responsibility for the development of all Famuan pictures. 14. Scan each photo and place it in the correct folder by deadline. 15. Inform office manager of film needs. 15. Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the editor in chief.

Managing Editor

1. Monitor weekly budgets ensuring that section editors are posting budgets timely and efficiently. 2. Attend all scheduled meetings/workshop or inform the editor in chief otherwise. 3. Monitor stories in all sections, ensuring that copy is being edited and meets journalistic guidelines. 4. Ensure that section editors meet the copy flow deadlines as outlined by the copy desk chief. 5. Oversee lay out of the sections and make sure that lay out is done in accordance with design guidelines and copy flow schedule. 6. Ensure that section editors fill out graphic/photo requests forms no later than a week prior to the issue for which the picture/graphic is needed. 7. Post office hours and be present during office hours. 8. Serve as editor in chief in her/his absence. 9. Share in responsibility when the newspaper is behind deadline, knowing what is going on with the newspaper at all times and answering to the editor in chief. 10. Keep the editor in chief abreast of developments concerning staff and content. 11. Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the editor in chief.

Editor In Chief

1. Supervise the newspaper staff. 2. Provide leadership in the newsroom through conducting staff and critique meetings. 3. Make sure all deadlines are met. 4. Serve as official spokesperson for the newspaper and is responsible for editorial decisions.. 5. Select and evaluate staff, which includes issuing demerits. 6. Generate story ideas. 7. Post office hours and be present during office hours. 8. Recruit contributors for the newspaper. 9. Keep adviser abreast of developments. 10. Assign pages. 11. Make sure newspaper gets to printer on time. 12. Monitor copy flow. 13. Determine newsroom policies and managerial processes. 14. Coordinate training for the newspaper staff. 15. Know what is going on with each section at all times and take full responsibility for the entire newspaper. 16. Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the adviser.

Deputy Copy Desk Chief

Deputy Editor

1. Develop the copy flow schedule and work with the managing editor to ensure the paper meets deadline. 2. Attend all scheduled meetings/workshops or appoint a representative from the section to attend the meetings, including budget and critique meetings. 3. Edit stories according to AP or local styles and manage the copy flow. 4. Work with section editors to monitor the section’s progress. 5. Oversee that wire stories are pulled if a section editor fails to do so. 6. Edit all stories, write headlines and cutlines in the sections before they are paginated. 7. Post office hours on the bulletin board and be present during office hours. 8. Have weekly meetings with assistant copy editors to discuss plans for the desk. 9. Take full responsibility for the desk, keeping abreast with the section at all times and answering to the managing editor and, in turn, the editor in chief. 10. Recruit copy editors to join the copy desk. 11. Review all pages before deadline to correct copy-editing and judgment areas in display type (particularly headline and captions/ cutlines). 12. Develop a more effective proofing process and lead page proofing. 13. Compile a list of copy editors. 14. Make recommendations to the editor in chief concerning staff changes for your department. 15. Complete any additional duties as deemed necessary by the editor in chief.

Circulation Manager

1. Pick up newspapers at 9 a.m. for distribution Mondays, Thursdays and twice a month on Fridays. 2. Deliver newspapers to distribution points outlined on the distribution list. 3. Replace media in newsstands. 4. Make recommendations on changes in distribution and equipment. 5. Be ready to perform extra circulation runs when necessary. 6. Perform any additional duties as deemed necessary by the advertising manager.

Assistant Copy Desk Chief

1. Develop the copy flow schedule and work with the copy desk chief or managing editor to ensure the paper meets deadline. 2. Attend all scheduled meetings or appoint a representative from the section to attend the meetings, including budget and critique meetings, and 3. Edit stories and manaage the copy flow in the paper’s sections. 4. Work with section editors to monitor the section’s progress. 5. Oversee that wire stories are pulled. 6. Edit all stories in the sections before they are paginated. 7. Post office hours and be present during them. 8. Contact writers. 9. Study and learn The Famuan’s style. 10. Recruit people to work in your department. 11. Attend all copy desk meetings and critique the paper. 12. Review pages before deadline to correct copy-editing and judgment areas in display type (particularly headline and captions/ cutlines). 13. Assist in developing a more effective proofing process. 14.
