Elections encourage freshman involvement

The posters are up, the flyers have been distributed and Tuesday, freshmen and graduate students will vote for their representatives.

Eighty-two freshmen are campaigning in the dorms , on the Set and in classrooms to fill 11 senate positions, one attendant position, a president and vice president position.

“I plan to establish a 24-hour eating facility, eliminate the pest problem, and fight for later library hours,” said Cedric Knight, 18, a freshman senator candidate from Live Oak.

He said he will plan monthly freshman class meetings and write proposals to enable the students to raise funds for laws they want passed.

Tara Crawford, another candidate for freshman senator said she would like to unify the freshman class, increase health awareness and promote sexual abstinence.

The posters are up, the flyers have been distributed and Tuesday, freshmen and graduate students will go to the polls to vote for their student representatives. With 82 freshmen candidates vying for 11 senate positions, 23 attendant positions and 2 president and vice president positions, candidates are actively campaigning in dorms, the Set and classrooms.

Tara Crawford, another candidate for freshman senator said, “As a senator I would like to accomplish unity for the freshman class, health awareness, a cleaner campus, and the promotion of sexual abstinence.” New members of the Student Government will partake in training sessions that will teach them leadership skills and engage in various fun activities that will give them the opportunity to bond with other SGA representatives, said Senate President Aziza Bowser.

Once the freshman president and vice president are appointed to office they will serve on the union board of advisors . The president and vice president are responsible for coming up with and publicizing activities for their class. The freshman attendant will immediately join the royal court and travel with the football team on away games to recruit.

Newly elected senators will play a major role in one of the Senate’s top agenda – voting. On The Senate will host Wake-Up Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the Set, in an effort to register students to vote and distribute information about candidates. Bowser said, “Some other goals of the Senate includes, improving the bowling alley, writing new proposals to revise the strict rules and regulations of the dorms and Palmetto apartments, improving the quality and efficiency of customer service (focusing on financial aid), improving the Coleman Library.
